What To Do When There’s a Divorce

Unfortunately, we are seeing a growing separation of couples through divorce, and while it may present a challenge to discuss with your children, it is important nonetheless. In this article, we want to share some ideas of what to do when there is a divorce in the family or within a friend group.

  1. Begin by bringing the couple to your family prayers. Prayer is a strong source of consolation and can help in sorting through feelings or thoughts. Talk about it openly as a family as you deem appropriate, always keeping in mind charity, and encourage everyone to pray for the couple.
  2. Emphasize kindness towards the couple or the family going through a divorce, especially if there are children involved. It is never easy to be a child whose parents are no longer together, so encouraging friendliness and positivity amongst your own children will help them feel loved in this challenging time.
  3. Reassure your own children that your marriage is permanent and that mom and dad love each other deeply. Depending upon the age of your children, you could discuss the permanency of marriage and how Catholicism views it. While divorce is not what God intended for marriage, couples going through it may not have a complete understanding of its true meaning or not be married within the Church. Because of the difficulties surrounding divorce, children may fear that it will happen to them so always having an open line of communication is critical.
  4. Invest in your own relationship with your spouse. Marriage is hard work, and there it is a constant opportunity to grow closer and strengthen your bond. Hearing about divorce is sad, but it is also a reminder to keep investing in your marriage, loving your spouse, and showing your children that your relationship is firm in its foundations.
  5. Practice gratitude for your marriage and family. Be grateful for the vows you exchanged and the permanency that you promised each other. Divorce is hard for everyone involved, and it is a consolation for your spouse and children that you have made the lifelong commitment to love through the ups and downs.

In particularly difficult or troubling situations, we encourage you to seek the advice and guidance of either a trained professional or a trusted spiritual advisor.

Be assured that our prayers are with anyone who struggles with divorce. If you or anyone is in need of prayers, join our prayer circle and ask Mary, Mother of Fairest Love, to help heal the marriage.
