The Blessing of the Statue of Mary, Mother of Fairest Love

Earlier this summer, a significant event for us took place in the artistic heart of Florence, Italy. The Prelate of Opus Dei, Monsignor Fernando Ocáriz, blessed the magnificent completed statue of Mary, Mother of Fairest Love. Designed and sculpted by the talented artist Cody Swanson, this statue is a masterpiece crafted from the finest Carrara marble, a material synonymous with elegance and purity.

During the blessing ceremony, which was attended by a handful of board members and donors, the Prelate spoke movingly about the significance of the statue. He highlighted the special invocation, “Mater Pulchrae Dilectionis,” which translates to “Mother of Fairest Love.” This title emphasizes Mary’s role as the Mother of Love, both divine and maternal.

The prelate reminded the attendees that Mary, as the Mother of God, embodies God’s love for humanity. He encouraged the faithful to reflect on this love when contemplating the statue, recognizing Mary not only as the Mother of God but also as our mother. “By contemplating this image, you can positively consider that Mary is the Mother of God and also our mother,” he said.

The Prelate also spoke of the importance of the family, likening the Virgin Mary to the “Venus of families.” He emphasized that families are fundamental to the Church and society, despite facing various challenges. By entrusting families to the care of the Mother of Fair Love, he underscored the vital role of Marian devotion in nurturing and protecting the family unit.

The use of Carrara marble, known for its superior quality and historical significance in art, lends the statue a timeless quality, connecting it to the rich artistic traditions of the Renaissance. Swanson’s work skillfully portrays the Virgin Mary with a serene expression and flowing robes, embodying a sense of peace and maternal love. This statue is destined for the United States, reflecting the deep desire of Saint Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei, to entrust the intercession of the Mother of Fairest Love to this influential country. She will first be housed at St. Mary of the Angels in Chicago, and then later moved to Chino Hills, CA once a suitable home for her has been created.

As this beautiful statue makes its journey to the United States, it carries with it a message of hope and love. The prelate expressed a heartfelt wish for the devotion to Mary, under this beautiful title, to flourish in the United States and around the world. He invoked the intercession of Saint Josemaría, who desired this image to inspire and uplift the faithful, particularly in America.
