Encouraging Freedom in Discerning a Vocation
As parents, one of the greatest gifts we can give our children is the desire and freedom to explore and discern their vocations. Whether they are called to priesthood, religious life, married state, or apostolic celibacy, this discernment requires a deep sense of freedom, trust, and support. Encouraging freedom in discerning a vocation is a beautiful reminder that parents are the first educators when it comes to faith and understanding God’s call in their lives. Here are some ways you can encourage and support your children as they discern their vocation.
Vocation as a Call from God
Helping your children understand that a vocation is not just a career choice but an actual call from God is an important first step. They have been given many gifts and talents that God would like them to use, and it is important to encourage them to consider how they can serve the Church and others through those talents.
- Prayer and Reflection: Encourage your children to spend time in prayer and reflection. Provide opportunities for family prayer, and encourage them to seek personal quiet time to listen to God’s guidance. A helpful suggestion may be to have your child bring a journal to their prayer where they can write to God discussing what is on their mind.
- Spiritual Guidance: Support your children in seeking spiritual direction. Help them find a priest or mentor who can get to know them and guide them through their discernment process.
Providing Freedom to Explore
Creating a supportive environment where your children feel free to explore different paths without fear or pressure is essential.
- Experience Different Paths: Encourage your children to participate in retreats, mission trips, or volunteer activities with different religious organizations, their parish, or other groups. These experiences can provide valuable insights and help them discern. The more familiar your children are with different vocations, the easier it is for them to see themselves on that path.
- Open Conversations: Foster an environment of open and honest conversation about vocation. Share stories and experiences of different vocations within the family or community.
Encouraging Growth in Virtue
Discerning a vocation is also an opportunity for growth in virtue. Support your children in developing their talents and virtues as they discern their vocation.
- Learning and Development: Encourage ongoing learning and personal development. This can include reading books of the saints, studying different aspects of our faith, or developing skills that will be useful in any vocation.
- Cultivating Virtues: Focus on cultivating virtues such as patience, humility, and love. These virtues grow when your child is placed in an environment that allows them to serve others.
By encouraging freedom in discerning a vocation, parents can help their children realize the wonderful gifts and talents that God has given them and use them in service of the Church and others. Whether they are called to religious life, priesthood, married life, or celibacy, supporting their discernment will help them understand their purpose in God’s plan and live a life of joy and service.
